No spoilers, I promise.
Saw Rise of the Apes with the wife tonight and I was actually impressed.
The story was decent and entertaining. You could actually hear and see people in the audience saying to each other "this is a lot better than I thought it would be".
There are bits of homage scattered throughout the movie a few familiar names and it certainly set's itself up for sequels but stands on it's own.
I like it more then all of the original planet of the apes movies except the first one and I'm an apes fan so far back I saw all the original films at the drive-in.
Good to hear. My stepson thinks it's the best movie of the summer.
ReplyDeleteThe girl dragged me to see it last night. I thought it was a lot of fun, although James Franco - who the girl adores and I accord some goodwill for Freaks & Geeks - phoned it in. But the CGI was way better than I expected and the movie did exactly what it said on the tin.
ReplyDelete(Although seeing even CGI animals get hurt affects me in a way that seeing humans hurt does not. Such is misanthropy.)
I would concur that it is the second best Ape's movie. If the original did not exist I think this could start a franchise on its own. I did appreciate all of the homage thrown in. I would have preferred a clip for Soylent Green maybe but what they used was OK. Not sure if the Newspaper headline was a lead in to a sequel or perhaps a suggestion of another reboot of a failed reboot.
