Both sides of the border are claimed by kingdoms, neither of which can beat the other or launch a campaign to pacify and claim more land on the border between the two. The border marches as they are known are a compromise of sorts and due to the nature of the fuedal realms lords and families own holdings on each side of the border. The six border marches are a place of ruffians, border reivers, and bandits; the border marches are fertile soil for adventurers.
Forty Great Families
There are forty great families among the border marches and among these families comes most of the action in the region.
The following table provides a simpel score for the presence of each family/clan within each march:

PC could be drawn from membership in these clans or among those that may serve them.
Relations between clan/families-
The relations between families will have a strong influence
on how encounters may unfold. It is recommended that the relations between
clans be determined ahead of time (maybe inside each march).
Relations Between Families:
11-12
|
Goodwill
|
9-10
|
Respect
|
8
|
Indifference
|
6-7
|
Antagonism
|
5
|
Enmity
|
2-4
|
Hostility
|
Goodwill- allies by marriage, politics, and trade. Can
expect sanctuary and assistance. +2 reaction rolls.
Respect- personal grudges may exist between family members
but overt widespread hostility would be unusual. Can expect sanctuary and
assistance. +1 reaction rolls.
Indifference- on the main there is no good-will or hatred of
note in recent decades between families. Sanctuary and assistance possible.
Antagonistic- rancor and bitterness is common. Sanctuary and
assistance unlikely. -1 reaction rolls.
Enmity- hatred and ill will. Sanctuary and assistance very
unlikely. -2 reaction rolls.
Hostility- open violence between families. There may be
truces restraining open violence but they can not be depended on for much. -4
reaction rolls.
There is no set map at this point (may never be) and due to the lawless and wild nature of border marches and the relations between the various families it's crucuial to know who owns the land one would travel through. Knowing who holds claim to a given area will shape how encounters with members of the various families and others will unfold.

The size of each piece of land in question will vary from but an acre or so of land to sweeping tracts of many square miles.
A minor family will be foudn in just one of the marches.
A petty noble lays claim to a noble title but is not related to any of the great families of the border or elsewhere in the kingdom.
A franklin holding is a farmstead owned by a free man with no noble blood and no strong connection to the other families of the border marches.
Northern and Southern Nobles are lords outside of the border region that still lay claim to parcels within the border marches. They will depend on hired agents to maintain their lands and will only occasionally visit.
Royalty are the ruling family of the kingdoms, each has a seat of power far from the border marches.
Foreign Nobles claim estates throughout the border marches due to the nature of feudalism. soem may be absentee landlords others wil take as acrtive a hand as they can manage sometimes spending years on an estate far from their true home.
Dwarves make claim to stetches of land here and there and may permit men to work the surface foir a portion of their produce in other places they jealously keep men away.
Elfin Realms are where the magics of elves and faeries impinge upon the mortal realm.
Giantish holds are possesions of families of giants and ogres some who lord over men others are rampaging monsters.
Bwg Sweeps are stretches of land picked clean and held by bwgish creatures (goblin, hobgoblins, bugbears and such) men who live there are either daring squatters, serville peasants, or slaves held in magical bondage.
Dragonwrack is those pieces of land ravaged by dragons. the lairs of some great dragons are well known to men and it is possible for some to be bargained with; many dragons are unholy horrors best avoided. A dragon would not knowingly permit use of it's land.
Disputed lands are domains where the claim is not settled between 2 or more parties.
